Legal Question in Business Law in Massachusetts

I worked for a company for 11 years but left a year ago i was supposed to go back and work for him but he decided to retire and he sold the phone number and a copy of his customers (not all jus most) so now i am starting out on my own and was wondering if i addvertised that i worked for that company is there any legal action him or the new owner of the number this is a plumbing and heating in mass

I do not know of any reason why this could be a problem. Do you have some agreement that bars this conduct?
