Late Charges

Is it legal for a college to charge a late fee on a tuition payment that is 1 week late, beyond what the late fee charge that is published when you agree to make payments. Published late fee of $5.00, charged $80.00.

If you have not been consistently late with your tuition payments, the school may waive the fee if you ask them nicely or type them a letter requesting waiver of late fee based on financial hardship. School's typically charge a late fee to make revenue for the school and for administrative fees incurred from their employees having to adjust the records and post payments after the deadline. Tell the school that you believe that their policy is an unfair burden on you since they post one fee and charge another. If all else fails, ask to make small $5.00 payments to show good faith on your part. Best of luck in your studies!
