Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Massachusetts

Late September we lost our cat. We posted ad's on craigslist, and we asked our neighbors if they saw her, we made many phone calls to animal shelters in MA & NH. We had almost lost hope, until January one of our neighbors said they had her

We offered to give them $100 for their time and money while they had her, they were upset that we couldn't pay back everything that they spent on her, which totaled to more than $400.

We told them that money was extremely tight, and we could not pay them back for everything.

They took the $100 check and cashed it, we had our cat back everything was great.

Now we are getting phone calls requesting more money, because they paid more then 100 in vet bills, and they want their money back. I have explained on numerous occasions that we do not have any more money.

Now they are threatening to take us to court.

Can I have some advise?

Thanks in advance!
