A friend of mine told me that he committed statutory rape and I feel as though I should do something. What can I do, if anything?

Re: Hearsay

What do you want to do? Obviously, there are any number of things you can do outside of the legal arena, and I leave that to your discretion. If you're thinking about reporting the incident to the police, that is certainly also an option. Before you go down that route, however, you should bear in mind that statutory rape is a very serious charge, with very serious potential repercussions. If the police and the district attorney uncover enough evidence to go forward with the prosecution of the case, the lives of both the perpetrator and the victim (and, of course, those people around them, including you) will be substantially impacted. Ultimately, however, you will have to decide for yourself what to do, and whether to contact the police or to take some other course of action. Under some circumstances, the choice about what to do is an easy one to make, but not always. In any event, good luck.
