Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Massachusetts

Mass.R.Civ.P. 4(c) - By Whom [Process Shall be] Served

Rule 4(c) of the Massachusetts Rules of Civil Procedure states that: ''[e]xcept as otherwise permitted by paragraph (h) of this rule, service of all process shall be made by a sheriff, by his deputy, or by a special sheriff; BY ANY OTHER PERSON DULY AUTHORIZED BY LAW; by some person specially appointed by the court for that purpose; . . .''

What is meant by ''by any other person duly authorized by law?''

Who else, besides a constable and deputy sheriff, can serve court process in Massachusetts? Who is ''any other person authorized by law?''

Thanks

In certain cases one can petition the Court by motion for appointment of a special process server, usually a constable where otherwise the statute requires service by a deputy sheriff only.
