Legal Question in Employment Law in Massachusetts

A friend was hired for a job several states from home. After relocating and struggling to find housing he was dismissed from his job. This was in the state of mass. What rights if any does he have since he now has no home or job in a strange state?

was he a w2 or 1099, did he have a contract, what was the basics job duties

Whether he has any claim depends on the facts. Did he leave a secure job to take this one? Did the employer make promises which he relied on and which the employer broke? Why was he terminated? Have they offered severance? I think it would be easier if he called to discuss.
