Legal Question in Employment Law in Massachusetts

i work 3rd shift because i have a disabled wife and 3 small kids. the company is feeling the effects of the economy and is having some lay offs and has decided to eliminate 3rd shift altogether. i have been told if i dont accept one of the other shifts they choose for me, i may be fired. and if they choose to lay any more off, they will not process the papers for months.
