Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Michigan

I am behind on an American Express bill, but a few months ago I set up a payment plan with them. I just made a payment on Saturday, it has been on auto pay for quite a few months. I just found out that American Express contacted my father, and set up a payment plan with my dad where he will pay them for 6 months. I am wondering why AmEx believes they can disclose my information to my father to set up a payment plan. My father is not, nor has he ever been on the account. I know it's legal for a debt collector to talk to them to get my information, but is it legal for them to disclose my information? Is there anyone I can contact to file a complaint? I'm really upset that they would call him and give him my information.

You are correct. The creditor was not allowed to discuss your debt with your father and you may use their mistake to negotiate down your debt. I have experience representing debtors in doing just that. For more information take a look at the debtor/creditor link on my website, www.lawrefs.com. You may contact me via the site if you are interested in my assistance.
