Legal Question in Criminal Law in Michigan

My brother was murdered in Sault Ste Marie Michigan on November 14th 1987. In the past few years many new things have come to light, especially since I started a facebook page on him. The detective who has his cold case file is not really interested in spending any time on this old case. So, I want a copy of everything the detective has including the coroner and pathologist reports. What do I get this information? I live in Florida but my dad lives near Sault Ste Marie MI so this info is as much for me as it is my dad.

I am sorry for your loss. Try sending a letter to the "Records Department" of the law enforcement agency that did the investigation. Write: Please provide all information, including but not limited to, police reports, lab reports, coroner's report and pathologist report, pertaining to the [your brother's name] investigation pursuant to Michigan's Freedom of Inofrmation Act.

If you have a case number, provide that in the letter as well. The department must respond within 15 days. However, there may be some information not available under the FOIA. The department must say why your request is denied if it is denied. You will be billed for retrieval and copy costs.

Good luck.
