Legal Question in Family Law in Michigan

Parental Rights

Our daughter my step-daughter) decided to move out, she just turned 18 and will graduate from HS in May. She moved in with her mother, but took the car we gave her without permission from us, the car is in my husband and my name. Her mother said she would return it when she bought the daughter another one. This could be weeks or months, in the meantime we have a loan on the car and have to make the loan payment and insurance payment. How can we leagally get the car back? We don't really want the daughter to go to jail but we do need for her to take responsibility for what she has done.

Re: Parental Rights

Just find the car and take it. You have the keys. Then, take proper proof of ownership with you and have it rekeyed. You are allowed to do self help as long as you don't endanger the peace. Don't count on this helping your relationship with step daughter. Bill Stern 248-353-9400
