Legal Question in Family Law in Michigan

terminating parental rights

I recently had a daugther, 3 months ago, the father is not named on the birth certificate, nor has he had anything to do with me or the baby. There has been a new man in my life since I was about 5 months pregnant. How can the new man adopt my daughter? Do I still need to terminate the natural father's rights?

Re: terminating parental rights

Yes, there is a procedure you need to follow through the courts to either have the father's parental rights terminated for any reason and/or so you can have someone else legally adopt the child. You need to retain a lawyer to ensure that the procedure is done properly, as there are several requirements you have to follow with regard to the legal parent, especially if he will not voluntarily relinquish his parental rights and opposes the adoption. Should you need a referral to a competent lawyer in your area, please contact me. I know a lawyer in the Plymouth area who has been handling adoptions for 15-20 years.

Thanks.
