Wise to buy furniture for my apartment?
My husband recently filed for divorce and we met with the Friend of the Court, working out a joint custody agreement for our two children. I will have the children most of the time and he will have them alternate weekends and three evenings a week, returning them at 8 p.m.
I plan to get an apartment (and the agreement states I will have the children live there with me while he is working since I work from home and am available 24 hours a day to care for them).
My problem is that I need furniture for the apartment, at least twin beds for my children and a bed for myself. I was told it will take at least six months for the divorce to be final. Would it be wise for me to buy furniture (a modest amount, beds and a couch and place to put the television) or should I perhaps rent furniture instead, so that the new furnuture might be taken away from me in the divorce settlement? I am leaving most of the furniture behind since it is needed for when the children stay there.

Greetings; I do not understand why you would not be able to take one half of the property from the marital home. You are clearly in need of a good attorney. Your temporary order should have provisions to answer your questions. There is no specific law that says who gets what. It is all settled by negotiation or by a judge's order. Good luck. Atty.
