Legal Question in Employment Law in Michigan

I was asked to not return to work until I cleared up a matter with Human Resources. The incident originated with me taking a handful of shop rags to put on my car seat (grease on pants). Past practice would support that people don't get fired for taking shop rags home. I was never told I was terminated (two months now) and don't have an official reason. The union and I met with the company to explain, but company doesn't want to even consider dealing with the issue. I have an exemplary personnel file and have been there over 30 years. The union doesn't see the urgency of being out of work for two months and keeps me waiting with very little communication. There are additional circumstances of due process and inequality of treatment for similar offenses. What do you suggest for me?

Well, you may be able to clarify the issue by filing for unemployment and then contesting any denial by appealing the decision.
