Legal Question in Employment Law in Michigan

I was recently terminated from my job. My former employer is refusing to pay my wages for the last pay period up to the date I was terminated. Should I file a dispute with the Dept. of Labor, or go straight to an attorney? The bottom line is, I would hate to pay $2,000 in attorney fees just to recoup $2,000, if that makes sense. I know what they are doing is not legal, according to Michigan Law Section 408.475.
