Legal Question in Traffic Law in Michigan

I have called the court house to explain why I couldn't go to my court date because my car has broken down and I live five hours away and no way I could get down there. They also said that it is my responsibly to be there but there isn't much I can do if my car is broken down. Is there a way to avoid going to jail? I've never been to jail before and I don't want to start now because I'm going to college to before I police officer.
