In need of some legal assistance

I have a ? as far as what shall I do in the situation about I went to court on a case pertaining to i was up north and I took my ex-girlfriend car to come down here to Magee, MS and I was looking for directions at the police station and as I was getting directions the came outside to run the tags on the car and it came up stolen. They called her to let her know the the car has been recovered with me in it. she dropped the charges but the state of Simpson County picked it up. I stayed in jail for four months and went to court on March 31, 2009. The DA ordered me to pay the fines of $1070.50 by the end of the month. By me being from out of state It took me awhile for me to get all of my information as far as my birtcertificate and all documents I need to get job. He was telling me that they will put a bench warrant out on me if I do not have the money in. Im trying my best on what I can do. Please reply--name removed--Ross

You need to contact a local lawyer in the geographical area near Court at once. You should discuss the reason you were held in jail 4 months when it probably was pretty easy to determine you had not stolen the car. At the same time it may be possible for you to negotiate a trade out for the time served in jail in lieu of some (or all) of the fines imposed. A good Attorney will also be able to ascertain if you have a valid claim against the Police for False Arrest, False Imprisonment, or any other basis for a claim which could be used to negotiate a "trade off" of liability for the fines. You may be able to enter an Agreement not to sue everyone if they drop the fines.
