Legal Question in Family Law in Missouri

transfer of guardianship

My sister in law left the state and left her 16 year old daughter living with my husband and I. She said that she would have no problem signing over guardianship to us so that we can get her enrolled in school and get her medical treatment when needed. The problem is, I don't know how to get it started or what's involved in getting it done.

Re: transfer of guardianship

Your sister in law may be able to sign a simple power of attorney to you and your husband which would take care of this situation for a period up to one year, and which could then be redone. You should check with the school district where the 16 year old would be going to school to be sure that they wil accept the power of attorney and not require a guardianship. If a guardianship is involved, then there is a legal process which takes considerable time and money to accomplish.
