Yes, it is illegal to drive a car on a public road without liability insurance. If your friend told you to drive their car, then they may not be able to come after you for the damage. But, the state can fine you for drirving without insurance. If you damaged anyone elses car or harmed anyone else in the wreck, you might be liable to them, as well as the vehicle owner if they knew you had no insurance.

Good luck
