Could I find out if my father who just passed away had a will or not without knowing the name of the attorney?

The first thing to do is to check with the probate court in the county of your father's residence. Anyone in possession of a will executed by someone now deceased has a legal obligation to deliver it to the probate court. They don't have to apply to have it admitted, but they do have to deliver it.

Other than that it would be just "normal" looking -- file cabinets, bank boxes, etc. If you think the will may have been executed recently check bank records for a payment to an attorney.

Good luck.
