Presumably, if they never pulled a license, they never actually got married, and so do not NEED to actually divorce. But there could be facts not set out that would complicate the analysis, and there are a number of doctrines -- putative spouse, cohabitation and palimony, etc., that depending on the facts, could make a big difference.
