Legal Question in Family Law in Nevada

custody of child

i have physical custody of a 3 year old child for 16 months. Her mother is in a CA jail. While in jail here in NV, the mother signed temporary custody to me. I receive no support, or help. How do I legally adopt this child?

Re: custody of child

Thank you for your inquiry.

In order to adopt a child that is not biologically yours you need to follow several steps:

1) You need to file a Petition for Adoption in the county in which the child has resided with you.

2) You will need to seek to obtain the consent of both the natural parents. If either parent objects, you will need to undergo potentially contentious litigation.

3) You must submit to and undergo an investigation by Child Welfare services to ensure you pass proper background checks.

My office does handle adoption proceedings, if you'd like to consult with an attorney contact my office at the information below.
