Legal Question in Family Law in Nevada

Legalities of a Vegas Marriage

I was married in Las Vegas by a justice of the peace October 8,1984. I was told to register the marriage license in the state I lived. I never registered the license. My question is..Is my marriage legal? I live in the state of Tennessee.

Please respond by mail, or telephone, I have no E-Mail address.

Is Vegas Marriage Legal?

The only way a Vegas marriage would not be legal is if it was made in violation of Nevada law. The rule on validity of marriages is that a marriage is valid everywhere if it is valid where it was performed.

So if you married your brother/sister, mom/dad, natural child, it wuld not be a legal marriage. It wouldn't be legal if one of you had a marriage that hadn't ended at the time the Justice of the Peace hitched you up. Or if you are both of the same gender.

There are other grounds for annulling a marriage that breaks up shortly after it is performed, but I doubt they fit your situation. Vegas marriages are the same as having the old "ball and chain" put on in your hometown church for thousands of dollars.
