How much will it cost the Home Owners Assoc to place a lien on my property?

If the HOA has a property management company, the cost will be pretty minimal, since they do that as a regular part of their business. If it has to hire an attorney just for this one task, it will cost a bit more, but still not a lot.

If this lien is for unpaid dues, it is standard paperwork and a simple procedure. Don't plan on using their expenses as a defense or negotiating strategy. They are perfectly willing to pay whatever it takes, since when they win in court, they likely will also be awarded their fees and costs against you, on top of the back dues you owe.

Once the lien is in place, you will not be able to refinance or sell the property without settling it - including the awarded expenses and accumulated interest. If you let it go very long, they may just execute on the lien and force sale of your property to collect. There really is very little hope of escaping it.
