Where was the work done - on your home or on someone else's home? Was your husband the general contractor and he hired the sub to do the plumbing? What type of entity is your husband's business - an LLC or a corporation? It is always best to contact the person to whom you owe money and work out an agreement before doing anything else.

If this is a business obligation, then the liability should be either only your husband's or the business. Did your husband have a business attorney set-up an LLC or Corporation or is he just a sole proprietor? If it is a LLC or Corporation, there may be no personal liability (unless he signed a guarantee.)

The first thing your husband should do is call the plumber and discuss the situation. The plumber may be more satisfied with monthly payments than nothing. If they cannot work it out, he should get a good business attorney.
