Legal Question in Criminal Law in New Jersey

Hi, in 2004 I admitted to a crime in US in the state of New Jersey. Two of the crimes were 4th degree and one was 3rd degree. At that time I was on F-1 student status. I worked with the public defender, enlisted in pre-trial intervention program and the charges were dismissed when I finished the program. I completed my degree, worked under Optional Practical Training and then did a Masters as well. However, I did not leave the country during that time.

After my Masters I got a job in a different country and moved. I applied for a US tourist visa and was denied based on the previous stated charges. I was told to check back as they were contacting lawyers in DC. It seems I may not be able to ever apply for a US visa again. Is this correct? They also said it may just be that I get a visa for one year at a time. Which one is more likely based on my situation. Any information would be helpful.
