Legal Question in Criminal Law in New Jersey

Disclosure

I was arrested 15 years ago but not convicted of a misdemeanor. I am currently applying for state certification for massage and bodywork and they ask if you've ever been arrested or convicted of a crime. If I answer no will they find out? I would be honest but they want all sorts of paperwork which I think is unfair considering I was never charged with anything and it happened so long ago!

Yes, they will find out. Regardless of the outcome, it stays on your record forever unless you get an expungement. See http://www.NJExpungements.com for more information.

Re: Disclosure

New Jersey doesn't have misdemeanors, just crimes and disorderly persons offense. They are both violations of the New Jersey criminal code. To be fully honest with them you can say that you were never convicted of any crime or misdemeanor, but you were arrested on a disorderly persons offense which was later dismissed. Good luck.
