Legal Question in Criminal Law in New Jersey

I wrote two checks for carpet material in new york to a new jersey company. after the material was delivered I put a stop payment on both checks. The new jersey company who I gave the check to in new york filed criminal charges for "bad checks". Did I commit any crime or is this a civil action. And if the alleged crime was committed it was in new york.
