Legal Question in Family Law in New Jersey

Adoption of Child from other than natural parents

My sister was given full custody of a child that was abandoned at their door step. We would like to adopt this child. Can the family member that was given full custody of this child put her up for adoption for us to adopt? What are the legal cost involved with something like this?

Re: Adoption of Child from other than natural parents

I cannot tell from your question who the original parents were. Was custody received from Division of Youth and Family Services? From the parents themselves? Depending on the answer to these questions, the answer would be different. There is a court procedure to allow for adoption and the cost would vary, depending on the facts of your particular situation. Keep in mind that this advice is based purely on the little bit of information that you have given to me. There may be other factors that would change my opinion. Further, no one can rely on advice from an attorney who has not been retained. Since it appears that you have not retained an attorney, before you take any further action, you should contact an attorney (either me or someone else) to discuss your matter in more detail. Only then will you be able to rely on the advice. I will be happy to assist you. However, you need to call me at 856-546-8010. Re: Adoption of Child from other than natural parents

hi -

when you file a complaint for adoption, you need the consent of the natural parents. you also need a agency report to the court saying that you are fit to adopt. court fees are about $75.00; new birth certificate is $6.00; agency report is anywhere from $300.00-$750.00; lawyer fees around $1500.00. your sister having custody doesn't make her have the legal standing to consent to the adoption, necessarily. feel free to call me at 609 263-0089, if you have any further questions. good luck !!
