Legal Question in Family Law in New Jersey

I am a single mom of an 8 year old girl. Her father signed the birth certificate at the time she was born. I heard someone on TV saying a birth certificate was not enough documentation to establish a child's legal status. I'd like to know if there's any further steps i should take to establish my ex's paternity. I mentioned this to him and he never heard of such thing before either.

Thank you for your help

it depends on what you are trying to do.

are you trying to make absolutely certain that he is recognized for all purposes as the father?

are you trying to have him pay child support?
