Legal Question in Immigration Law in New Jersey

New law

I applid for permanent residency in 1994. I was married at the time to a us citizen. We got divorced in 2001. I was applying under the abuse law. I was an abused spouse. I went for interview my passport was stamped and I got a SSN. My lawyer did not follow up paperwork so my case was cancelled for me to get my greencard because I did not respond to sign a piece of paper. Now I have US born child and I heard that there was a new law about grandfathered aliens and ones who apllied before a certain time and also about aliens who have US born chidren.

Re: New law

There are situations where you will be grandfathered. However, in your case grandfathering may not be necessary depending on what your lawyer did or did not file. The best approach would be to have another lawyer take a look at the file and get up to speed on what exactly occurred in your case.
