Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New Jersey

New Jersey: tenant left and I had utilites put in my name (to make apt ready, etc). Now utility company wants me to pay the deadbeat tenants $600 past due part as well as what I have used since they moved, (I get I will pay my part, no problem) How did I get stuck with their bill in their name? (Tenant had paid bills for years, just not prior to leaving) Thanks

Water and sewer service that is provided by an MUA can become a lien against the property. If these bills are for something else, they are the tenant's responsibility.
