Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New Jersey

my parents moved in to an apartment in 1980 they paid rent for about 2 years then they became the super, now 32 years later the family is taking over and they told my parents they are not the super any more and that they have to move out!!! this is horrible and my parents are devastated. Is this legal and can they do this.? This is a rent control building with 14 apartments and a small house attached to the back..
