Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New Jersey

I started a lease agreement which involved 2 realtors as well, was unable to complete the agreement and move in as originally agreed due to illness; requested deposit back from landlord and they have refused. What legal recourse do I have.

Not sure what you mean by "started" a lease agreement. Do you mean you signed it? If so, it is a legal contract and you are obligated to perform. Their legal recourse could be to sue you and require you to pay for all amounts that you agreed to pay under the lease, whether you moved in or not. There may be some defenses. You should seek legal counsel to make that determination.

Keep in mind that this advice is based purely on the little bit of information that you have given to me. There certainly may be other factors that would change my opinion. Further, no one can rely on advice from an attorney who has not been retained. Since it appears that you have not retained an attorney, you may want to contact an attorney to discuss your matter in more detail. Only then will you be able to rely on the advice. Good luck!
