Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in New Jersey

right of ownership?

My grandmother passed away over 10 years ago leaving us with a piece of property in north carolina. my sister who is executor of the will never did anything about the property or paid the taxes. the property was going up for auction for being past due on the taxes for 10 years. i have been currently paying the taxes in order not to lose the property. do i have an legal right to claim this property as my own? is there a way i can have sole ownership?

Re: right of ownership?

Your sister should have prepared or had the attorney for the estate prepare a new Deed registering the property in the names of the heirs. Your payment of the taxes becomes an estate debt, and you can sue your sister for reimbursement, or settle with her by having a Deed prepared now that will place the property in your name alone, in consideration and discharge of the bills you have paid.
