Legal Question in Business Law in New York

I am trying to be my own event planer at home. I like to plan events with my friends and have been very successful but never for a profit. It has been my money that I have lost over the last year. In 2012 I want to make a change. I want to make events and profit but I need to know the legal way of doing this. I want to start a business with cards so that I can give flyers and Information out to the public. I also need to know the Government side of it with taxes. I will give you an example and then you can break it down from there. I rent a bus for 2200 at 55 people. That would equate to 40 dollars a person. this bus trip will be headed to NYC. If I decided to charge 50 which will be a 10 dollar a person profit (total $550) how do I make that legal? I know that I would have to tell the government this. I really would like to do bus trips and themed parties and gain some money. I want to be legitimate with this and quit my part time job after nine years. Please help so that I do this the correct way.

Your question is pretty all-inclusive, but you haven't (and shouldn't) indicated any information about your tax or insurance situation that would be crucial to advising you as to the business entity you should set up or how you need to conduct your business (there's nothing illegal about making a profit, btw). You really do need to sit down with an attorney who practices business law and hash out the legal end of your business.
