Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New York

A friend has been working for this guy, the sole owner of his company, for almost a year now on an event by event basis. The guy has never been prompt at paying but this time my friend is owed about $4000. Now the guy has committed suicide leaving behind substantial debts. Is there any way my friend can still get his money?
