Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New York

ny cls GOL 11 105

Hi.

I shoplifted at Macy's Herald Sq. 3 months ago. They called the police and sent me to the precint. I tried to steal something less than 100$.

The court charged me with a fine of 95$, one day community service, and a shoplifter's course after.

Now Macy's wants 775 $ as a civil demand. I don't have the money and I don't want to pay something i don't have. Is there any way i can avoid paying this? please help me out. i am desperate. thanks

I guess it depends on whether the court has directed you to pay Macy's the money or whether Macy's is just asking you to pay...I don't know. If they are asking you to pay the question is why are they asking for so much...Did they incur attorney fees or some other expenses they feel are your responsibility since you stole from them (or tried to) and because of that they had expenses they otherwise would not have had...is that it? If that is the case I don't know what you could do to avoid it. If a Judge directed you to pay that amount there is nothing I can do. Can you negotiate with them for a reduced payment?
