Legal Question in Elder Law in New York

Elderly parents asset protection

My parents are 77 and 80 and living independently. If one became ill and needed to be in a nursing home, would they have to spend their joint assets to pay for it (they currently have about $450,000 in cash assets, the value of their house and Social Security. They have Medicaid and Dad is a veteran...no other medical insurance or long term care insurance.

Thanks!
