Legal Question in Family Law in New York

Name Change

I would like to use change the my name and I want to be known as J. Elizabeth Doe instead of Jane E. Doe, because my mother and I share the same first name and I never really felt as though it was my name. Do I have to still go through the legal process of changing my name even if I want to be known as J. Elizabeth Doe?

Re: Name Change

You don't if you simply want to be called that in everyday life. However it can get confusing for legal documents. For legal documents unless you want to officially change your name you should stick with your birth name.

Should you like to discuss this or any other legal matter, you can e-mail me for more information about low cost face-to-face, on-line, or a telephone consultation with a lawyer in our office.
