Legal Question in Employment Law in New York

My boss won't pay me since his client didnt pay him

I work for a company as a project audio engineer.

I worked for 5 months on audio for a independent film. The owner of the company assured me that when he got paid by his client, he would pay me in full.

The client did not pay the owner of the company, so the owner is not paying me. Is that legal???

What can I do to get my money?
