Legal Question in Employment Law in New York

I am moving from Manhattan to Long Island, a location 30+ miles away from where I currently live/work, and my supervisor is refusing to approve my transfer to a location that would be closer to where I am moving. The new location has space and wants me, and my supervisor will not give me a specific reason why she cannot approve the transfer. What is my recourse in this case? Is there a certain number of miles limit whereby one can move, and the employer cannot block a transfer to a closer location?

New York is an at-will employment state and you can be terminated for any non-discriminatory reason. Likewise, your employer may arbitrarily refuse to allow you to transfer to a different office for any non-discriminatory reason, including the fact that he or she does not like you or simply doesn't want to fill out the necessary paperwork.

Unless your employer's decision is discriminatory or in violation of its own company handbook, you probably have no legal recourse.

Best of luck,
