Legal Question in Real Estate Law in New York

Lost property

We lost $1700 on a property, b/c my father-in-law said that he and his wife (my mil) would co-sign with my wife on a mortgage. He sexually abused my MIL and they are noiw getting divorced. He said that she needed to come off the application in order for him to go through with it. Are we able to hold him accountable for the lost monies. We had the conditional committment letter saying that we were approved.

Unless your FIL was on the application and agreed to assist in writing, you have no recourse except for moral obligation to assist or reimburse.
