Legal Question in Traffic Law in New York

unpaid speeding ticket in upstate ny

I recieved a speeding ticket in december which I completely forgot to pay on time, and I recently got a letter in the mail telling me that I now need to appear in court. I was wondering if I could settle the matter without going to court? How much trouble have I gotten myself into by not taking care of the ticket? I never sent it in to plead guilty or not guilty, but I would like to just pay the fine and get it taken care of. Also how much of an effect will this have on my driving record?

thanks.

You should get a lawyer who knows traffic law. Failure to answer on a ticket of any charge in New York State is an automatic suspension depending on the jurisdiction's action. Depending on the charge, you could be facing a steep fine, suspension, both plus a surcharge and if you carry more than 6 points, you will be receiving a bill from the DMV called the Driver Responsibility Assessment which varies in amount depending on the number of points. An attorney can help.
