Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in New York

Estate of my friend

My friend died last February. His estate is with the public administrator in Brooklyn. I am suppose to be in his will. Is there any way I could get permission from the court to check his checking accout to see did he write any checks for a lawyer. He has no family and no children. I have his death Certificate as I paid for his funeral. I wrote letters to all lawyers in his area but had no luck.

Typically, you can petition the Court for permission to open a safe deposit box or other other safe to check for a Will. Do you know of a safe deposit box or where your friend did his banking, generally?
