Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in New York

Can you negotiate debt at parent's death?

My father passed away a year ago. My question is: My mother also just passed two months ago. She left credit card debt and not a lot in the estate. Is it possible to negotiate debt with credit card companies? Or what little that is left go to them instead of inheritance?

Negotiations are always possible, and the indebtedness to the credit card is a claim against inheritance.
