Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in North Carolina

Can a company demand ''mandatory'' attendance for a charity meeting?

Our company is heavily involved in the United Way fundraising. The Human Resources department issued a pledge card to each employee for payroll deductions at source or voluntary contribution options. The covering memo indicated that attendance at the fundraising meeting was ''mandatory'' and several employees have been chastised by their superiors for non-attendance.

Can a company do that? Attending mandatory fundraising meetings is not in my job description.

As long as they do not force you to contribute, yes, the company can mandate that all employees attend any meeting they so designate. NC is an employment at will state-meaning without a tight employment contract, "they" can fire you for any or no reason. i.e. "they" don't like the color of your shoes.
