monitoring email correspondence

If email correspondence between two parties is monitored by a 3rd party, without their knowledge, is this the email equivalent of wiretapping and is it illegal?

It depends upon the context and environment. More information is necessary before a question like this can be answered. In short, though, chances are great that, unless you have suffered some type of injury or damage, you would not have a claim aginast this type of behavior.
