Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in North Carolina

medical bills 8 years & 10 years old

I have been contacted (for the last 3 months) by a collection agency in Nevada (I did live in NV for 8 years) They are telling me that I owe $796.58 divided $206 (4/3/1997) $74 (3/17/1997) $155 (6/11/1999), $65 (6/15/1999) balance of $294.77 (who knows why). I do not have any idea if these are real bills or not. I don't have records 8 and 10 years ago. Is there a time frame that these bills can be held for? Can they keep coming after me? I have lived in North Carolina for over 4 years now.

My advice is always to keep a log of all calls - date, person who called, company, phone number and address and substance of conversation. Next time they call ask them to stop calling and to send you a written letter regarding the debt. Then you will send a letter back (by certified mail, return receipt)requesting verification of the debt and go from there. There is lots of helpful information on the internet if you do a google search (e.g. fair debt collection practices).
