Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in North Carolina
Our son, age 29, is living in our house. He has never paid rent. We have told him to leave. He is on drugs. He is stealing everything he can get his hands on in our home. Can we gather all of his belongings and have them waiting safely outside for him when he returns from a trip without any legal recourse?

The better way is do file a small claims action called "summary ejectment" to kick him out. That way, the sherriff will come and help you evict him if needed.
