Changing lawyers can slow litigation and it can be hard to find an attorney to take a contingency case when another lawyer has been responsible for developing a trial strategy, especially if your trial date is fast approaching. But generally speaking, you have the right to choose your own counsel.

About the time the jury is coming back, but seriously any time before the trial starts. You need to have confidence in who is representing you and if the relationship sours then it is time to make a change. For example I just took over a case on the eve of trial because my client was uncomfortable with her counsel. Sometimes your old lawyer wasn't moving your case fast enough so a change could actually speed things up. Even if a change would postpone a trial date it is still worth it if you do not have confidence in who is handling your matter. Remember not all lawyers are cut out to try cases.
